Why remove shark nets?

Each year, hundreds of marine animals – including dolphins, turtles, rays, and even whales – die in the shark nets installed along 51 ocean beaches in NSW.

These aren’t the barriers at harbour beaches. We’re talking about 100-metre fishing nets placed 500 metres offshore, from September to March, specifically designed to kill sharks.

But the facts speak for themselves:

  • 90% of animals caught are not target sharks.
  • More turtles, dolphins, and rays are caught than the species these nets target. These trapped animals attract larger sharks closer to swimmer zones.
  • Sharks easily swim around or under the nets – they do not act as a barrier.
  • Research shows no difference in shark bite incidents between beaches with and without nets.

Far from protecting people, shark nets offer a false sense of security – while leaving a deadly toll on marine life.

Shark net decisions aren’t just a coastal issue. State MPs from all regions influence the outcome. Whether you’re inland or by the sea, your MP’s stance matters.

The more local voices they hear, the stronger the push for change.

That’s why your voice matters more than ever.
